Repair and restoration work continues at the Mendeleevsk Museum of Local Lore.
The museum is located in the building of the former factory office of P.K. Ushkov and Co. Chemical Plant Partnerships. It is an object of cultural heritage and a monument of history and architecture of national importance.
According to Maya Morozova, head of the restoration department of the GIS RT, in 1868 the chemical plant of the village of Bondyuga (almost a hundred years later, in 1967, the newly formed city was named after the great chemist Dmitry Mendeleev) produced its first products. Then there was a need for a building to accommodate managers and employees. And in 1870, a one-story house with a 15-meter observation tower was built.
"In the first half of the 20th century, a second floor was built, which was reached by a two-arched stone staircase with oak handrails and cast-iron balusters. The main attraction, a cast-iron fireplace, has been preserved here to this day. You can also see a round iron stove standing in the center of one of the rooms. The famous Ushkovsky floor tiles have survived on the ground floor," said M. Morozova.
The museum building consists of volumes of various heights: a two-story building cuts into a single-story building stretched along the street in its middle part. The first floor is built of limestone stone and ceramic bricks, the second is made of logs. The buildings are covered with gable roofs. Adjacent to the one-story right wing is a square brick tower with an insert of hewn stone and from a distance attracts attention with its unusual architecture for the local area, reminiscent of an ancient castle. The tower is completed with an architecturally columnar belt and pillars on the roof.
Like all the property of the P.K. Ushkov Chemical Plants Association, the office was nationalized after the revolution. Until 1985, this building housed the directorate and departments of the chemical plant. Karpova. From 1985 to 1989, there was a vocational school here. In 1991, it was transferred to the Museum of Local Lore.
According to the contractor, the work program includes the repair and restoration of the roof and facade. Windows and doors will be replaced in a way that is close to the historical image. In particular, the ground floor is pierced by rectangular windows with architraves and niches in the wall, located on the street side almost level with the ground. The windows of the second floor are united by a window sill, framed by platbands with large teeth. The decorative design of the windows was repeated during the construction of the tower. The windows, one on each side of the tower, have arched ends and are placed in niches with large teeth in the upper part.
In addition, all utilities with bathrooms and air conditioning systems will be replaced. The decoration of the premises is carried out taking into account the reconstruction of historical decorative elements.
The builders plan to complete all types of repair and restoration work on the museum building by August of this year.
