The remediation of silt fields in Kazan is the only environmental facility implemented by the Ministry of Construction, Architecture and Housing of the Republic of Tatarstan in 2025. It is included in the national project "Environmental well-being" and is transitional.
The silt fields of the Kazan municipal sewage treatment plants have been operating since 1974 and cover an area of about 100 hectares in the water protection zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. They are designed to dry the raw sediment and stabilize the sewage sludge of Kazan sewage treatment plants. During its existence, the actual filling of the silt fields exceeded the design capacity. According to the examination conducted in 2020, there is a high content of dangerous pathogens in the sludge, and in some maps there is an excess of permissible concentrations of heavy metals. Given the proximity of the reservoir, this is a real threat to both the river and the environment in general.
Reclamation began in November 2021. At the moment, 13 million cubic meters of diluted sludge have been pumped into large-sized containers (geotubes) over 8 million cubic meters, which exceeds 62% of the total plan. Permanent and temporary anti-filtration protection devices have been installed at 85%. Operational performance of all types of work has reached 89%.
The total financing of the project is more than 8 billion rubles. This year, 1 billion 54 million 93 thousand rubles have been allocated for the work, including 221 million 359 thousand rubles from the republican budget.
The customer of the work is GKU GISU RT, the general contractor is NGO YADRAN-STROY. The reclamation of silt fields in Kazan is scheduled to be completed in December 2025.
The implementation of the project will make a significant contribution to improving the environmental situation and will affect over 1.5 million Tatarstan residents.
It should be recalled that the national project "Ecological well-being" is aimed at caring for the environment in order to make it comfortable for people.
